Job Description: Principal Consultant – Mining
Purpose of the Role:
As a Principal Consultant, you will manage projects and client relationships, and work with our technical experts to guide leading mining companies in the integration of nature and biodiversity into decision-making. You will help grow our work across the mining sector and with other companies in the minerals supply chain to improve uptake of biodiversity management into corporate and site-based strategies and action. As a successful candidate, you will be playing a crucial part in shaping the future of nature sustainability in the mining sector, particularly for critical minerals required for the energy transition.
The Biodiversity Consultancy’s mission is to integrate nature into business and finance decision-making through science-based approaches. Your work will also include collaborating with industry bodies, sustainability initiatives, academia, financial institutions and civil society to share experiences, build capacity and help build a nature-positive future.

Responsibilities:
Project delivery
· Delivering large, complex consultancy projects, with multiple technical and stakeholder inputs, including:
· Developing site-based biodiversity strategies and action plans for mines and large development projects in line with good international practice.
· Assessing the impacts and dependencies on nature at individual sites and across the value chain of large, multi-national mining and mineral companies.
· Assessing sector-wide biodiversity risk with industry associations and other stakeholders.
· Setting corporate targets for action on nature aligned with global initiatives and regulatory requirements (e.g. TNFD, SBTN, CSRD).
· Interpretation and application of a range of frameworks and business drivers, including global goals, corporate policy, lender requirements and regulatory guidelines.
Business development
· Develop and support work proposals to new and existing clients.
· Collaborate with partners from civil society and industry groups, such as IUCN, ICMM and IRMA.
· Expand our global business network in the mining sector, engaging with new and existing clients and partners.
Innovation and communication
· Public speaking on behalf of The Biodiversity Consultancy, including writing and delivering presentations.
· Collaborating with colleagues to apply innovative technical approaches for mining and mineral sector application, including metrics for biodiversity and pressures on nature.
· Write and review material for best practice guidelines, scientific and business press, the TBC website and publications.
· Other duties commensurate with the role.
Essential attributes and experience
· At least 5 years’ experience of working on site-based conservation or biological field work projects
· Experience of sustainability within business projects and supply chains and/or of developing or contributing to programmes delivering strategic or landscape-scale change
· Good understanding of ecology and conservation science
· Excellent presentation and writing skills with experience in presenting complex concepts to a business audience
· Project and people management skills
· Good honours degree in a relevant discipline
· Values and actively supports diversity
· Passionate about creating positive environmental change
· Good track record of business development and client relationship management
Desirable attributes:
· Consultancy experience
· Experience in the mining and/or renewable energy sectors, metal and mineral supply chains and with an existing network with business sustainability leaders
· Good knowledge of global environmental frameworks and initiatives (e.g. TNFD, SBTN, CSRD) and lender standards (e.g. IFC PS6)
· Experience working in Latin America, Africa and/or Asia
· Proven ability to work in French, Spanish, or other languages.
· A postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline
· Solid technical data analysis and interpretation skills
