Roles & responsibilities

Professional High Performance (PHP) training is our umbrella term for the non-technical education that we provide to our consultants to ensure they have high trajectory careers. The training (hybrid) is loosely based on top-tier consulting graduate programmes (i.e. Bain, McKinsey, BCG), given these firms dominate the highest levels of every industry globally and we want our consultants to achieve this level of success. While our clients come to us for technically skilled consultants, it is the consultants' professional behaviours that will ultimately determine their long-term success, so the importance of this role cannot be understated. The training covers four areas:

  • Business fundamentals - business models, value chains, industry forces etc. (workshop-based)
  • Problem-solving - frameworks and methodologies to solve commercial problems (workshop-based)
  • Interview training - interview communication, techniques and behaviours (workshops and mocks)
  • High-performance professional behaviour: e.g. growth mindset (this is the hardest part of the job)

The role is responsible for the PHP training and critically, its outcomes (the actual coaching is only a small part of the job; enabling and ensuring that the behaviours and knowledge are demonstrated over the training programme and beyond is the much more critical component, i.e. that are our trainees are described as 'high-performance). This includes delivering the programme as well as working very closely with the teams that run hiring (finding and assessing graduates) and deployment (helping them excel once they're consultants). It will almost certainly suit an ex-consultant. Part of the role will involve collaboratively developing a deep and practical body of work to understand and assess what top-tier performance is and exactly how we can enable and deliver it. You will also be a key player in influencing the long-term outcomes of the individuals that are core to our mission.

Objectives (what does the role own?)

  • What? Own, understand and deliver the outcomes of our trainees through our PHP training, and catalysing long-term high-performance in those individuals
  • How? Through understanding what clients want, what delivers long-term career success, how we uncover it, and critically, obsessing over identifying and enabling high-performance in our trainees.
  • Why? Our mission: delivering social mobility through world-class education and execution.

Day-to-day (what does the role involve?)

  • Delivering, developing and improving training material, workshops and case studies
  • Delivering, developing and improving intensive interview training and client readiness coaching
  • Deeply understanding learning methodologies to make the training high impact and memorable
  • Developing our teams' day-to-day behaviour to enhance the impact on the trainees
  • Becoming a thought-leader in the attributes required for long-term success and how to unlock them
  • Working with our hiring function to interview candidates before they join the programme
  • Working with our deployment and sales function to ensure consultants become top-quartile performers
  • Playing a key role in the team and doing whatever it takes to achieve the mission and principles as we grow

Requirements

Professional and academic:

  • Academic: undergraduate or MBA (the institute is less important than the standards you've set for yourself)
  • Professional: 5-7+ years' professional experience in a top-tier management consultancy or other high-performance delivery focused organisation (e.g. i-bank, VC/PE backed business). You will have had ownership of delivering world-class standards of work, judged by someone who demands it (and you feel comfortable working in this type of environment)
  • Additional capabilities: experience in either coaching, mentoring, training, teaching or high-performance management; teaching/education-specific experience is not essential
  • Industry: specific industry knowledge isn't particularly important but you'll have a very good understanding of business in general, larger organisations, and the roles that consultants and juniors play in them

Attitudes and behaviours:

  • Alignment with our principles - see below

Nice-to-haves (interest or experience in):

  • Learning and education best practice
  • Teaching and coaching adults
  • Technology and its impact on society

Principles and behaviours

This is a key part of what we offer - the chance to pursue a meaningful mission alongside a group of people working for each other and trying to deliver exceptional outcomes. we'd want you to contribute to and role model the below:

  • Excellence in service of impact - at the core of our business is impact through education. In pursuit of this goal we strive for excellence, recognising also that the work we do is almost always in service of someone else, enabling them to be brilliant.
  • Thoughtful respect - we understand that the pursuit of excellence is hard, and each of us is a person, not a number. This is critical to our day-to-day interactions and our messaging. It means we always show each other the respect to give and receive feedback, and to do so thoughtfully and with humanity.
  • Ownership & leadership - by working here you're choosing not just to be an owner but also a leader - a role model for others: to take ownership of not only your work but also the mission, and the shared responsibility for performance. It means optimising for the outcome of your team and the business, being deliberate about your impact, and owning mistakes.
  • Continuous improvement - it is imperative we understand what it is that allows us to be excellent, and to build on it so that we can amplify our impact over time. We aim to do this as individuals and as an organisation: having a hyper-focus on clear objectives, detailing our thinking and then proactively seeking, giving and listening to feedback on our assumptions and work, and finally, having the discipline, courage and determination to improve every day.
