What will you be doing?

WE are the Friends of the River Crane Environment (FORCE). For the past 20 years we have worked with a range of partners in the lower River Crane valley, between the A4 and the Thames, to improve the ecology of the river and its green spaces, and to improve public access to them. We are an entirely voluntary, community-led charity with around 750 members, most of whom are local residents. The Chair of a board of up to ten trustees will have the opportunity to lead and shape the priorities and activities of the charity in delivering its environmental and educational objects, working in partnership with local communities, local authorities, private-sector developers and stakeholders and other environmental groups. The role of Chair, like that of all of the charity’s trustees, is entirely voluntary and unpaid.  The current Chair is planning to retire at the end of March 2024 after three years in the role, having spent over twelve years as a trustee. We are in the process of planning for a successor. Any applicant interested in becoming the Chair of FORCE will be expected to become a FORCE trustee first. Our approach for new trustees is for them to be a co-opted trustee for an initial 12 months before formally joining the board. Any prospective Chair will go through the same process as interested/potential new trustees.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who has:

Leadership skills Experience of committee work Tact and diplomacy Good communication and interpersonal skills Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.

In most circumstances, it would also be desirable for the chair/vice chair to have knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation and a wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.

What difference will you make?

As Chair you'll provide leadership to our board of Trustees, a team of passionate individuals, and guide the strategic direction of the charity.
