The V&A is a family of museums dedicated to the power of creativity—its power to entertain and move, to enrich our lives, open our minds and change the world. We celebrate and share that power through a programme of exhibitions, events, educational and digital experiences, a collection of 2.8 million objects, and through our support for new works and commitment to conservation, research and sustainable design.
The V&A has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of textiles representing the decorative arts of many periods and cultures. The Textile Conservation team works with all textiles related objects from the archaeological to the contemporary, including dress and accessories, flat textiles, furnishings, tapestries, carpets, upholstery, and broader organic materials such as leather, feathers, fur, and plastics.
As a Senior Conservator (Textiles) you will support the delivery of the museum’s Public Programme and its strategic objectives. You will undertake all aspects of practical conservation of textiles from the Museum’s collections, including assessment and technical examination. You should have a good practical knowledge of textiles and related materials, their material properties and their mechanisms of degradation and damage.
For the role of senior conservator, you should have demonstrable experience of a wide range of conservation techniques, the ability to quickly evaluate conservation problems, think innovatively and creatively to develop solutions, aspiring for excellence in your work. You should also have a proven ability to work independently, project manage and organise tasks to work in an effective and efficient way and to produce a high standard of work within tight or conflicting deadlines.
Benefits include a generous pension scheme, 29 days plus bank holidays, flexible working, tickets to V&A exhibitions, subsidised staff canteen, 25% discount in V&A shops, and a bicycle loan scheme.
