Organisation summary: ESA, the European Space Agency, is at the forefront of space exploration and monitoring. The Vigil mission is a vital part of the Space Safety Programme, aiming to provide crucial data for space weather prediction and to protect Earth from solar phenomena. ESA fosters collaboration with renowned agencies like NOAA and NASA, and offers a stimulating environment for professionals passionate about space science and safety. As an equal opportunity employer, ESA values diversity and encourages applications from all qualified individuals.

Role Summary:Ensure that the Vigil mission reaches its maximum operational and scientific potential through all phases.Work within the technical, financial, programmatic, and safety constraints to achieve goals.Report to the Head of the Space Safety Programme Office.

Role Requirements:PhD in space physics or space environment modelling.Experience in coordinating and managing external scientific and industrial teams.Strong communication skills, tact, diplomacy, and discretion.

Vigil is a Space Safety Programme cornerstone mission that will position a satellite at the fifth Lagrangian point (L5) with the objective of performing continuous observations of the Sun, and the space between the Earth and the Sun, to provide measurement data for space weather nowcasting and forecasting and for event-based warnings and alerts of solar events.

The observations from L5 will complement space weather monitoring from the Sun-Earth line and enable more accurate space weather impact predictions and early warnings of the emergence of potentially hazardous solar weather conditions. ESA is cooperating on space weather monitoring with the US (NOAA and NASA) which is planning to continue maintaining operational space weather monitoring on the Sun-Earth line through missions to the first Lagrangian point (L1) and with instruments on-board satellites orbiting the Earth.

You will report to the Head of the Space Safety Programme Office within the Directorate of Operations. Your tasks and responsibilities will include: ensuring, as a goal, that the maximum operational and scientific return from the Vigil mission is achieved throughout the study, development, operations and archiving phases within technical, financial, programmatic and safety constraints.

A PhD in the field of space physics or space environment modelling is required for this post. Particular importance will be attached to your experience and ability to coordinate and manage external scientific and industrial teams conducting studies and model development activities, to communicate, and to behave with tact, diplomacy and discretion.

ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We therefore welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged. At the Agency we value diversity, and we welcome people with disabilities.
