The Deputy Director of Communications will work across the four Together for Girls initiatives: the survivor-centred Brave Movement, the Data to Action partnership, the Safe Futures Hub, and the Out of the Shadows Index.
Position overview
As an integral part of the global, collaborative communications team, the Deputy Director of Communications will have a multifaceted role. The responsibilities of this position include:
- Development and implementation of Communications strategies and tactical plans to raise the profile of TfG and its leadership;
- Maintenance of the brand integrity of TfG and its four initiatives;
- Press & Media framing, planning and outreach;
- Managing Communications-focused projects/grants to ensure cohesion across TfG
- Communications, and positioning of TfG within target issues and partnerships; and
- Oversight of and support for content creation.
This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Communications and has line management responsibility within the Communications team. This is a full-time position, based in either Kenya, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
Responsibilities and Duties
Communications strategy (10%)
- Work closely with the Communications Director and other leaders to update the long-term organizational Communications vision and strategy.
- Maintain current plans and lead the development of new Communications plans and protocols to advance the Together for Girls brand identity; enhance the profile and reputation of the team; and increase the visibility of our priorities across key audiences.
- Translate the strategy into a prioritized work plan and support the communications team in developing strategic KPIs.
- Ensure cross-team collaboration and coordination to promote Together for Girls’ key messages and initiatives.
- Provide leadership, expertise and reporting in all areas of Communications (internal and external) for, and in collaboration with leaders.
- Develop and refine the organization’s core messages to ensure organizational consistency across such public communications resources as press releases, fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, speeches, talking points, and others.
Team Development/Management (10%)
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality, trustworthiness and collaboration.
- Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
- Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
Media relations (20%)
- Help oversee the organization’s press outreach, editing press releases, statements and op-eds as needed.
- Provide real-time crisis communications support as needed.
- Introduce best practices and refine existing processes and procedures that expand the capacity of the department to proactively meet the communications-related demands of the Together for Girls initiatives.
- Translate dense research and concepts into digestible messaging that resonates with press and target audiences.
- Cultivate, maintain and expand relationships with key journalists, editors, bookers and others who regularly cover violence issues in national, regional and local outlets.
- Write press releases, statements, briefing memos, talking points, and op-eds related to the Together for Girls initiatives.
- Monitor trends and developments in media and culture related to violence issues;
- Identify opportunities and suggest strategies for positioning TfG as a leading public authority in the field.
Project management (35%)
- Managing communications-focused TfG projects and grants to ensure cohesion across communications channels.
- Serve as project lead for several key initiatives within the Together for Girls portfolio and/or manage communications-specific budgets for grants and track deliverables.
- Assist in budget preparation; develop budget recommendations; review expenses against budget; control budget expenditures.
- Supervise communications work plan tracking deadlines, deliverables, and team member updates.
- Monitor staff time usage for each grant and provide projections for prioritizing time.
- Serve as the primary communications point of contact for external relationships, including partners, funders, allied organizations, consultants, and vendors.
- Collaborate with program managers and departments to coordinate the implementation of grant-funded projects.
Content creation (15%)
- Manage ongoing creation, design, and translation of materials working in collaboration with external suppliers.
- Development of other written and visual content as required.
Support to the Director of Communications (10%)
- Work closely and collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure
- strategies are aligned across the organization.
- Work with partner organizations on joint messaging and shared media goals as appropriate.
- Execute special projects as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in relevant fields and a minimum of 8 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, media, or public relations.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills.
- Experience in securing media coverage to further organizational goals.
- Existing portfolio of media contacts.
- Experience in managing and supporting the development of colleagues.
- Undergraduate/Bachelor’s Degree
- Be a self-starter with strong project management skills and the ability to work in a complex, fast-paced environment managing multiple deadlines.
- Possess superior interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a highly collaborative team environment, coordinating between leadership, press, the communications team and programmatic colleagues.
- Excellent English language skills.

- Language proficiency in Spanish, French and/or Swahili.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience supervising.

Background
Violence against children and adolescents is a prevalent and devastating global crisis. Sexual violence is a notable taboo, and often hidden, form of violence. Across the globe, between 4-35% of girls and 1-21% of boys experience sexual violence before their 18th birthday. Childhood sexual violence takes on many forms and it can happen to anyone.
We envision a world where every child and adolescent is safe, protected, and thriving. Decades of research show how effective solutions can prevent sexual violence, with policies and programs to ensure survivors access healing and justice.

Location & ways of working
This position is full-time and can be based in Kenya, the United States, or the United Kingdom. Applicants should have work authorization for their preferred location.
This is currently a remote position with the expectation to travel to attend some in-person meetings periodically. This position will also require travel up to 10% of time.
All team members are expected to be available during Together for Girls’ core working hours of 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. The other four hours that the team member chooses to work are flexible and may be coordinated with their supervisor.
Compensation
This role offers a competitive salary adjusted to the cost of labor in the city where the candidate resides. The final salary within this location-adjusted range will also be determined by the candidate’s qualifications and years and type of experience.
