Organisation Summary

The Optoelectronics Section, part of the Optics, Robotics and Life Sciences Division in ESA, offers ground-breaking research, development, and functional support in optoelectronic device technologies. You will be joining a team of around 20 engineers, working to meet the challenges posed by optoelectronic technologies within ESA missions and instruments.

Role Summary

  • Provide technical support and consultancy in photodetectors, focal plane instrumentation, and testing techniques.
  • Participate in project reviews, feasibility studies and procurement proposal evaluations.
  • Identify critical development issues and assist in resolutions.
  • Contribute to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans.
  • Define, initiate, and manage R&D activities for both short and long-term needs.
  • Explore new application areas with a focus on innovative concepts and cutting-edge technologies.
  • Monitor scientific and technological trends and maintain state-of-the-art expertise.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings across the Agency.

Role Requirements

  • Master’s degree in optoelectronic engineering or physics, PhD preferred.
  • Experience in the design, definition, development, and testing of photonic devices and detector imaging systems.
  • Knowledge of the environmental testing of space hardware is an asset.
  • Experience providing support in detectors at the system level for Earth Observation and Science missions is a strong asset.

Optoelectronics Engineer in the Optoelectronics Section, Optics, Robotics and Life Sciences Division, Mechanical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality. The Optoelectronics Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research and development (R&D) in the field of optoelectronic device technologies and applications. The Section is staffed with around 20 engineers supporting all ESA projects and offers a unique opportunity to contribute on the challenges related to optoelectronic technologies needed for ESA missions, spacecraft, instruments and equipment.

Duties include providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the field of photodetectors, focal plane instrumentation development and testing techniques throughout all project phases; participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and the evaluation of procurement proposals; identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution; contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes; defining, initiating and managing R&D activities covering both long- and short-term needs; fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures; carrying out laboratory activities as required; monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise; contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency.

Applicants must have a master’s degree in optoelectronic engineering or physics. Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD. Solid experience in the design, definition, development and testing of photonic devices and detector imaging systems is required. Knowledge of the environmental testing of space hardware would be considered an asset. Experience in providing Earth Observation and Science missions with support in the field of detectors at system level and in monitoring critical R&D activities tailored for the specific needs of the mission would be considered a strong asset.
