Application instructions: Please submit a short CV and a very brief cover note summarising (1) why you're applying and what you'd bring to the party, (2) wording for a short, on-brand social media post to make us stand out (+ even shorter description of accompanying image / video) and (3) one excellent question for us. Points for brevity!

ABOUT THE BUSINESS

Marvellous Maps is a small, independent map publishing business. Our folded, flat and framed maps entertain and inspire people to explore Britain’s best bits, with well-researched, humorous content and a strong belief that maps should be fun, not just functional. We began life in 2014, and became a certified B Corporation in 2021. We’re proud to support three fantastic British environmental charities (Trees for Life, Surfers Against Sewage and the John Muir Trust). We’ve had some success over the first 10 years of being in business, and we’ve got high ambitions for the next 10 years and beyond (including becoming a more content-led, mature publishing business) - this role will be crucial in achieving them. We’re a small team (in number!) and work remotely so we especially appreciate all-rounders who communicate and collaborate well and are happy to muck in.

We're committed to diversity, equality and inclusion. Our customers, suppliers and other stakeholders come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire, develop and promote great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. In our quest to entertain and inspire people to explore Britain’s best bits, we’re building a culture where difference is valued. Come and be part of our adventure!

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Comms & Content Manager role is a broad-ranging role that covers much more than managing our social media accounts*. Ultimately it could span all our communications channels, but is likely to be prioritised on key channels in the early stages. It involves close collaboration with our Head of Marketing and our Managing Director, plus plenty of interaction with other team members and key external stakeholders, such as our wonderful customers (current and future).

The role is, like all our roles, both remote (please be UK-based, as we aim for monthly-ish meetings, usually in London) and flexible in terms of working hours (as far as possible within the constraints of the role). The role is freelance, with longer-term potential for transition to an employee role as the business develops.

* Note: managing our paid social media advertising is not in scope for this role.

ABOUT YOU

Being an excellent communicator, you’ll have a witty way with words and proven experience using your skills to grow a brand and audience through written content, organic social media and other non-paid channels. You’ll have the ability to portray the essence of the Marvellous Maps brand in every touchpoint / interaction with audiences, and create good, engaging content. You’ll be professional, fun, positive and share our love of travel and adventure in Britain, as well as a good funny place name. In addition, some knowledge of and interest in environmental responsibility would be beneficial. If you have visual content creation skills, that would be a fantastic bonus, but the chief requirement for this role is on the verbal side.

You’ll want to play a crucial role in a small, independent business / B Corp, and want to be in it for the long haul because you know the deeper satisfaction that comes from finding your professional home, building long-lasting professional relationships and achieving great things together.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to our communications & content strategy, ensuring it’s joined-up and on-brand across all channels
  • Create great content
  • Build the brand and audience through managing our social media accounts and other communication channels
  • Monitor, analyse and provide insights on performance, audience and market
  • Contribute to the team and business more broadly - to be agreed, could range from helping with research / product development to contributing to analysis and decision-making

REQUIREMENTS

  • A genuine ‘alignment’ with the brand as it is today and our aspirations to become a more content-led, mature publishing business in future
  • A fantastic turn of phrase, love for the English language and ability to adopt a brand’s tone of voice (and help refine it over time)
  • Experience defining / implementing communications and content strategy for a small b2c business
  • Relevant sector experience and / or good knowledge of Britain from a travel / adventure perspective
  • Experience managing social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and other platforms, and using social media / content planning tools
  • Great communication, collaboration / remote team-working and relationship-building skills
  • Good attention to detail (yep, pedantry required!)
  • Balancing professionalism with a sense of fun - including but not limited to being positive, self-starting and well organised (to GSD, obviously, and create more time for the fun stuff!)

NICE-TO-HAVES:

  • Knowledge of environmental responsibility and B Corp standards
  • Journalism or other relevant professional writing experience
  • Visual and audio content creation skills
  • Surprise us - if you have other relevant talents, let us know :-)

WHAT WE’RE OFFERING

  • Competitive pay and longer-term potential for transition to an employee role
  • Potential longer-term equity scheme participation
  • Flexible hours and location (along with regular opportunities for in-person meetings)
  • Structured support for your learning and development
  • Opportunities to progress, take on more responsibility and potentially broaden the role
