As Workshop Manager, you'll be leading all workshop activities of the Angola programme, including training local mechanics, overseeing the fleet's maintenance, and leading a team of mechanics. You will report to the Fleet Technical Advisor and liaise with HALO’s Global Head of Fleet and Road safety and the Logistics team.
Role Requirements:
- HND/HNC in automotive engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of five years experience as a workshop manager.
- Experience in multi-location maintenance facilities.
- Ability to train local nationals in vehicle mechanics.
- Experience in leading across cultures and language barriers.
- Strong IT skills and excellent English skills.
- Valid driving licence including for Large Goods Vehicles.

HALO has been working in Angola since 1994 when we established a mine clearance programme in Angola. Today we have over 1,200 staff in Angola spread across a vast area with five different base locations.
About the role:
As a senior leadership role, the primary responsibility of the Workshop Manager is to lead, manage and motivate all workshop activities on the Angola programme. The successful individual will have a mandate to develop the programme workshops at each base location and deployed in the field in line with programme strategies set by the Programme Manager.
Working Relationships:
Managing the workshop country team, the workshop Manager will report directly to the Angola international Fleet Technical Advisor. HALO’s Global Head of Fleet and Road safety and HALO HQ Logistics team will provide professional support and be a sounding board for decision making as required.
Responsibilities:
The Workshop Manager you will be responsible for training local mechanics, overseeing the inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance of our fleet. You will lead a team of mechanics, ensuring that all repairs are carried out to the highest standards and in a timely manner. Your role will be crucial in maintaining the operational efficiency and safety of our fleet.
Key Responsibilities
- Knowledge and experience in repair of the following vehicle types: Land Rover, Toyota Land Cruiser, Daf 4400 Truck, Kamaz Truck and JCB plant.
- Work within the rules of the relevant global SOP’s.
- Create and manage a preventive maintenance plan.
- Manage and oversee all repair and preventive maintenance activities.
- Implement standardised workshop systems across all programme repair facilities.
- Inspect and diagnose issues in vehicles and plant equipment.
- Train and instruct local National mechanics on proper repair techniques and standards.
- Provide training on expedient repairs to ensure vehicle recovery in remote areas.
- Move between programme locations to troubleshoot issues.
- Conduct workshop and location safety audits, implementing safe working practices.
- Manage inventory of spare parts and equipment.
- Provide spare part procurement plan to ensure enough spare parts to maintain the fleet to meet operational requirements.
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repair activities.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless operations.
Requirements
- HND/HNC automotive engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum five years’ experience as a workshop manager.
- Experience working across multi location maintenance facilities.
- Ability to train local nationals vehicle mechanics and systems.
- Effective risk manager across all aspects of the workshop operation with experience of coordinating a detailed risk assessment programme to reduce cost and improve road safety.
- Experience in leading and working effectively across cultures and language barriers.
- Ability and motivation to work in a challenging environment and to live and work in close proximity to others.
- Strong IT skills.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Valid driving licence including Large Goods Vehicles.
Desirable (not essential)
- Previous work experience in Africa.
- Previous work experience with an NGO.
- Experience in humanitarian mine action.
- Kowledge of Portuguese language.
