Role Summary
- Ensuring operational security policies and procedures are implemented and effective to safeguard personnel, infrastructure, and assets
- Supporting country programmes manage their risks through risk assessments, training, systems improvement etc.
- Developing and maintaining HALO's security manual and procedures, risk management plans, deployment of global staff tracking systems etc.
Role Requirements
- Relevant experience in security roles and risk mitigation plan development
- Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and cross-cultural collaborative abilities
- Good command of Microsoft Office, security platforms, written and spoken English
- Possibly some international travel

Role: Security Advisor (Part Time)
Location: UK Based, Remote
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract: Part Time, 12-month fixed term contract (possibility of extending, dependent on funding)
Key Int Relationships: COO, Programme Managers, HR, Training Team, Security Focal Points.
Key Ext Relationships: Security advisors, tracking platform vendors, HEAT training providers, INGOs.
Job Purpose: To ensure HALO’s operational security policies and procedures are maintained and implemented effectively, enabling safe delivery of operations while mitigating risk to personnel, infrastructure and assets.

Most of our staff are local employees and include a growing number of women. Our primary duty is to serve people affected by conflict, clearing landmines and the explosive remnants of war that threaten lives and livelihoods long after fighting has finished. We make land safe where war has ended, while also assisting those affected by active conflict and endemic violence. HALO addresses human suffering caused by armed violence in some of the world’s most fragile places, securing weapons and ammunition and working with both state and community actors to reduce the prevalence of armed violence.
About the role:
This part-time position ensures HALO’s security systems, protocols and training are fit for purpose and aligned with global standards. The role involves supporting country programmes in managing operational risks through assessments, training, documentation, and systems improvement.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintain and develop HALO's security manual and operating procedures.
- Support programmes with risk assessments, security plans, SOPs, incident management exercises, and checklists.
- Oversee SAFE and PSAT (HEAT) training alignment and attendance in coordination with HR and Training teams.
- Monitor and improve deployment of global staff tracking and emergency communications systems.
- Maintain HALO’s Serious Incident Management Plan and associated procedures.
- Deliver crisis management training and guidance to HQ and field programmes.
- Advise programmes on enhancing local security networks and mapping stakeholders.
- Guide programmes on development of security infrastructure, communications, and contingency planning.
- Source or deliver supplementary training tailored to country-specific risks.
- Support and coordinate with programmes on context-specific security tasks and improvements.
General:
- Uphold HALO’s core values and standards, promoting its ethos and mission statement.
- Ensure familiarity with and adherence to all HALO policies and procedures, especially the code of conduct and safeguarding
Requirements
Essential:
- Demonstrated and relevant experience in security roles.
- Strong analytical skills and experience conducting risk assessments.
- Experience developing and implementing risk mitigation plans.
- Effective communicator with the ability to provide practical guidance.
- Ability to work cross-culturally in diverse operating environments.
- Strong ICT skills, including Microsoft Office and security platforms.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally if required.
Desirable:
- Experience working in humanitarian security contexts.
- INGO field-based experience.
- Recognised security management qualifications.
- Familiarity with tracking and monitoring technologies.
Travel Requirements:
- Availability for occasional travel to operational locations as needed.
