Join the Independent Safety Office at the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC) as a Safety Systems Engineer, playing a crucial role in overseeing and certifying compliance with ESA policies, standards and requirements. Our energetic and diverse team supports ESA projects across a range of areas including human spaceflight safety and planetary protection.

Role Summary:

  • Ensure alignment with ESA-wide safety policies and agreements
  • Develop and maintain safety policies, requirements and standards
  • Define safety requirements for crew transportation systems and future human spaceflight missions
  • Liaise with human spaceflight stakeholders for consensus on safety requirements, hazard control and non-conformance resolutions

Role Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a relevant domain
  • Experience in spacecraft systems engineering and human spaceflight safety
  • Mission operations safety experience is a plus
  • Proficiency in English or French. Knowledge of another Member State language is an asset

We are looking for a Safety Systems Engineer to join our team at the Independent Safety Office, Quality Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC). Our office is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance and certification of compliance with ESA policies, requirements and standards. We also provide independent support to ESA projects in human spaceflight safety, space debris mitigation, re-entry safety, nuclear safety for applications in space, and planetary protection.

The role entails ensuring alignment with ESA-wide safety policies and multilateral agreements, developing and maintaining relevant safety policies, requirements and standards. You will be defining safety requirements and processes for crew transportation systems and future human spaceflight missions with the relevant European industry and international partners. You will also be liaising with the relevant human spaceflight stakeholders to ensure a common understanding and interpretation of safety requirements, hazard control implementation and verification and resolution of non-conformance reports (NCRs).

Job requirements include a master's degree in a relevant domain and solid experience and a background in spacecraft systems engineering and human spaceflight safety. Experience in mission operations safety would be considered an asset.
