Power Systems Modeller

Department: Analysis

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: UK - London

Compensation: £45,000 - £65,000 / year

Description

The Power Systems Modeller is a role supporting critical functions for Field. High-granularity modelling of our target markets helps to steer strategic decision-making, supports fundraising, and provides vital input data into our in-house optimisation platform.

At Field, we recognise the increasing complexity of energy and energy services markets, fundamental drivers of volatility, and the interactions between both. By maintaining a highly granular model of the key revenue streams in our target markets, we can help to inform both short-term trading decisions and longer-term investments (from siting considerations to relative sizing of assets as we diversify). In-house modelling capability also helps us to better understand the key regulatory and market risks we may face in operation, supporting the sustainable growth of our portfolio.

This subject matter expertise role will sit within our small, expert Analysis function, working together with the Fundamentals Modelling Manager and Analysis Director to develop our granular models from the ground up. The Power Systems Modeller will also interact strongly with the Technology function building our in-house optimisation and trading platform, the Strategy function as we appraise new markets for entry and develop new operating strategies, and with the Finance and Project functions to support their activities.

The Power Systems Modeller will combine expert programming skills with experience of energy systems and the modelling thereof. This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented modeller, keen to make a real difference in the renewable energy and zero-carbon flexibility space. As we expand our footprint into new jurisdictions and asset classes, we are likely to hire additional modellers to work under this role.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Build new, bespoke, high-granularity BESS revenue models: Design and build, in collaboration with the wider Analysis team, a highly granular energy systems model for:

    1. GB

    2. European markets

    3. Other emerging markets

The model will exhibit fine temporal and, later, geographical granularity, and produce revenue stream forecasts supporting our business cases and trading decision-making.

  1. Build new asset class models: As Field develops its pipeline beyond standalone BESS, and in collaboration with wider Analysis team, develop concept models and prototypes for new asset class operational and revenue models.

  2. Maintain energy market models through proposed reform: As market reforms are announced and implemented, conceive of plausible model representations, build prototypes, and implement following best practice QA.

  3. Provide energy market expertise: Together with Analysis colleagues, provide technical expertise around the energy and ancillary services markets to the Tech team and wider business.

  4. Contribute to innovation projects: When required, contribute modelling expertise to standalone innovation projects.
