Being socially impactful means acting in a way that benefits society, responsibly. For us, we believe being socially impactful shouldn't be an afterthought, it should be built into the way a business operates. Businesses have a duty to act in the interests of the world, not just focusing on driving profit.

What does it really mean to be socially impactful? It's all about acting in a way that benefits society, responsibly. At Escape the City, we believe being socially impactful shouldn't be an afterthought, it should be built into the way a business operates. Businesses have a duty to act in the interests of the world, not just focusing on driving profit and shareholder value.

Working for a socially impactful organisation is also proven to help boost employee morale. Helping others brings fulfilment.

That's why we created the Escape 100 list in 2019, to help highlight organisations doing great things and provide inspiration to job seekers and business builders alike. When scoring the organisations, we multiplied their mission and planet scores by how far-reaching their work is in the world. This gave us their impact score.

Here are 5 of our favourite organisations from the 2019 Escape 100 who scored highly in these areas. They're doing truly great things to make big splashy impactful waves.

This independent charity was set up in 2012 from inside The Economist newspaper. Their mission is to change young people's lives by giving them the skills to think and speak for themselves about current affairs. They enable young people to join inspiring discussions about the news in their classrooms and with peers in different communities, with input from global topic experts. They learn to think critically, creatively solve problems and communicate effectively about the issues shaping their lives and futures, from inequality to climate change.

They work with 8 to 14-year-olds from low-income backgrounds who face deep-rooted disadvantages in education and employment, are often hit hardest by issues in the news and are less likely to end up in positions of power where they can influence them. They equip them with news-literacy skills that can change their outcomes.
