Teacher of Academic Projects

KCLMS aims to prepare students effectively for further learning, careers and life beyond school. We recognise that the core curriculum entails a selection of subjects that is too specialised to meet this broad and important outcome. The Teacher of Academic Projects will play a pivotal role here by developing students’ skills of academic literacy, research, collaboration and communication.

The post may be either part-time or full-time, ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent), i.e. from 3 to 5 days per week. Candidates are asked to state their preference in their supporting statement.

The Teacher of Academic Projects will take direct ownership of the King’s Certificate: an in-house programme involving extended, collaborative research projects set by industry professionals and university academics. The programme culminates in publication of an article in a KCLMS journal created for this purpose, and a presentation given to industry partners, university academics, staff, parents/carers and governors. All our students complete the King’s Certificate during their first full academic year at the school.

The postholder will also oversee the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is offered to all year 13 students. Approximately one quarter of students complete this qualification, which enables them to select their own area of interest to research and develop. For a full-time appointment, the postholder will also take on additional teaching or responsibility in the school depending on their experience and interests, selected from the following:

  • Teaching personal development (PSHE), mathematics, physics, computer science or economics
  • Taking on the role of a pastoral tutor
  • Overseeing the development of skills for learning (including collaboration and communication) across the curriculum
  • Leading and managing the school’s programme of clubs, societies and visiting speakers
  • Coordinating the school’s programme of sports and exercise.

The successful candidate will have strong academic credentials. They may come from a range of academic backgrounds including the humanities and the social sciences. They may already have a proven record of outstanding teaching, or they may be new to the profession, in which case they would be supported by the school’s thorough mentoring programme. A vital qualification will be that they share the vision of the school to help young people with a particular aptitude for mathematics find challenge and excitement in a curriculum that fosters intellectual growth and curiosity.

We don’t want potential candidates to be put off if they believe they do not meet every one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of our qualifications described.

The post will commence from 30 August 2022
