An exciting opportunity to join the Senior Leadership team of one of the UK’s most iconic brands, the Eden Project, on a fixed-term contract to December 2023. Eden is a major tourist attraction, educational charity and social enterprise in one, with ambitious plans for expansion on a global scale. We are seeking to appoint a Chief Digital Content Officer (maternity cover) to help us continue in our aim of amplifying our voice in the debate around the future of the planet, building on our twenty-one year history of exploring the interconnectedness of life and the environment at every scale.

Job Family Definition

Roles within the Brand, Audiences and Digital functions are responsible for developing and delivering the Eden Project’s brand strategy to build brand profile, awareness and reputation, extending and diversifying its audience reach and engagement, and maximising the delivery of commercial and cause related revenue streams.

The division includes Eden’s brand and audience development, destination and commercial marketing, visitor engagement, consumer insight, communications, digital experience and delivery, membership and fundraising, and eCommerce and ticketing activities, building a lasting relationship with current and future audiences, and driving value and revenue in the process.

Role Purpose

The Chief Digital Content Officer will develop and deliver an over-arching digital content strategy and framework, with the key aim of amplifying Eden’s Mission to existing and new audiences. You will be an exceptional storyteller, who asks all the right questions and writes with impact and flair. You will establish Eden as a thought-leader in the environmental and sustainability sector, collaborating with partners internal (interpretation, education and learning, marketing, digital, design and insight) and external (establishing and commissioning a network of contributors and editors) to generate world-class and inspiring digital content* for use across multiple platforms and formats.

You will play a key role in developing and delivering Eden’s digital vision, positioning Eden as a leading convener of debate, discussion and conversation around relevant issues, championing new technology to tell our stories more widely. You will be responsible for putting in place clear processes to help manage information flows across the organisation, as well as mapping and tracking success against agreed outcomes.

*Including but not limited to producing, commissioning and publishing digital content for thought pieces and articles, virtual events, digital workshops, webinars, podcasts, and onsite virtual visitor experiences.

Demands of the Role

Education & qualifications

The jobholder will be a graduate or equivalent, with a qualification in an appropriate field to area of work, preferably in journalism or media. Evidence of continuous professional development. 

Knowledge & skills

Minimum of five years’ senior experience within a similar role. This would preferably be within the environmental/sustainability sector or the post holder will have strong knowledge of/interest in this area; 

A solid editorial or media background, with in depth knowledge of how content is developed and consumed across different platforms and by a range of audiences, and a clear understanding of how to most effectively exploit content in the digital space; 

Outstanding command of the English language, sharp editorial judgement, excellent and engaging copywriting (including digital copywriting best practice) and editing skills, and meticulous proof reading/attention to detail. A talent for taking complex subjects and issues and translating these into compelling stories, making them both engaging and easily understood; 

Experience of developing and implementing content strategies, with demonstrable ability of working collaboratively to get the support of different internal teams and senior stakeholders. 

Wide ranging experience of briefing and commissioning content from external contributors, and a network of editorial/journalistic contacts within relevant areas. 

Project management skills to manage editorial schedules and experienced in putting in place processes to manage information flows and track progress against agreed outcomes.

Demonstrable experience of using audience insight and segmentation to help define and shape content planning.

Decision- making

This is a senior level role where the post holder needs to be confident and experienced in making creative and editorial decisions, within the overall Eden strategy and brand framework. Operates autonomously within agreed priorities. Works to largely medium to long term objectives where professional judgment will be required.

Resourcefulness

Requires high level influencing and negotiating skills, and a collaborative style of working. Must demonstrate adaptable thinking and respond well to change. A high level of personal organisation and ability to prioritise a diverse workload while maintaining excellent attention to detail is essential, as well as the ability to work on own initiative to deliver agreed objectives.

People & asset management

Participates in the Digital Advisory Panel. Manages network of external contributors/editors (freelance). Monitors and controls the departmental spending, ensuring expenditure does not exceed the agreed budget (£tbc). Authorised to sign-off expenditure of up to £5k. 

Communication & visitor experience

Communications are critical to this role. The postholder must demonstrate the ability to collaborate with and align multiple teams, whilst keeping a single strategic approach central throughout, and to shape and influence multiplatform strategy at the highest levels of the organisation.

Operational environment

Remote working possible with regular visits to Eden in Cornwall.  

Additional Features

Strong interest and knowledge of emerging digital technologies and platforms. Needs to keep abreast of trends and new technologies relevant to the sector and subject matter, and demonstrate a strong interest in, and ability to anticipate, current and future digital trends.

Digital production skills including practical knowledge of a range of associated processes, technologies and software

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional storyteller, who asks all the right questions and writes with impact and flair. They will come from a strong editorial or media background, with a minimum of five years’ senior experience within a similar role, preferably within the environmental sector (or with strong knowledge of/interest in this area); they will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of how content is developed and consumed across different platforms and by a range of audiences, and display a talent for taking complex subjects and translating these into compelling stories, which are both engaging and easily understood.

They should enjoy working collaboratively to get the support of different internal teams and senior stakeholders, and have wide ranging experience of briefing and commissioning content from external contributors, coming to the role with an established network of editorial/journalistic contacts within relevant areas. Strong interest in and knowledge of emerging digital technologies and platforms is essential.
